What’s a Giraffe doing in Chestnut Hill?
It’s just one of the 50 wonderfully decorated animals of
AbZOOlutely Chestnut Hill!
Combining the talents of local artists and the support of community
businesses, social groups, and civic organizations, AbZOOlutely Chestnut Hill
brought 50 whimsically painted animals to the community’s streets, avenues
and public spaces. It was the first presentation of a "zoo" of different animal forms in one
art project anywhere in the country.
Art On The Street For Everyone To Enjoy
Using sculptures formed from white fiberglass and supplied by
Cowpainters, LLC of Chicago, Illinois, artists from the Philadelphia area were commissioned to decorate
their own AbZOOlutely version of various animals. On September 16th, 50 animals were unveiled to reveal a veritable zoo of AbZOOlutely fabulous animals which will be on public display in Chestnut Hill through the first week of November.
Support for Chestnut Hill and America's oldest Zoo.
AbZOOlutely Chestnut Hill was sponsored by the Chestnut Hill District in order to raise funds for three worthy purposes. The main fund raising event was a auction held on November 18th. The proceeds from the auction, the raffle, and sales of AbZOOlutely merchandise will be shared between the Chestnut Hill Community Fund, projects for the preservation and beautification of the District, and the Philadelphia Zoo.
AbZOOlutely animals auctioned!
On Saturday, November 18th, 48 AbZOOlutely wonderful animals were auctioned off at a Wild Party and Animal Auction. (Chestnut Phil was raffled off and one llama was too damaged for auction). The evening was a huge success, with nearly $80,000 raised! Go to the "See the Animals" page and then click on image of the animals to see the results.
