AbZOOlutely Chestnut Hill Architects

Philadelphia and Philadelphia architects have been leaders in the architectural profession since colonial times. As the largest English speaking city in the world outside of London, and for a time the capitol of the United States, early Philadelphia was the conduit through which leading European ideas, culture and science were introduced to the new nation. This national influence continued in the 19th century as the city emerged as an important scientific community and as the largest manufacturing center in the nation. In the 20th century Philadelphia early and eagerly addressed the pressing issues of urban design, development and historic preservation and eventually became an acknowledged leader in urban renewal and architectural design and education.

Notable individual architects have included William Strickland (Second Bank of the U.S.), Thomas Ustick Walter (U.S. capitol extensions and dome), John Notman (Philadelphia Athenaeum), Frank Furness (Penn Fine Arts Library), Wilson Eyre, Paul Philippe Cret (Folger Shakespeare Library), George Howe (PSFS Building), Mitchell/Giurgola (Australian Parliament House), have been national leaders in the world of architectural ideas. In addition, the work and words of Louis I. Kahn (National Capitol of Bangladesh) and Venturi/Scott Brown (National Gallery extension, London) have been seminal in the development of architectural thought and built form world wide.

With a multitude of talented practitioners and four institutions (Penn, Temple, Drexel and Philadelphia University) granting professional degrees, Philadelphia continues in the 21st century as a vibrant leader in the development of serious architectural thought and buildings. AbZOOlutely Chestnut Hill is extremely fortunate to have ten leading Philadelphia architecture firms participating, each having created a unique art work from an architectural perspective.
